SUNCARE

4 minute read

Summer is here! Fun in the sun with your kids means making memories, but it also means battling with sunscreen application and removal. Using sun protection with skin-safe ingredients is a major part of a child’s summertime wellness routine, but did you know that proper sunscreen removal is just as important?

How to pick a safe sunscreen for kids

It all starts with choosing the right sunscreen. After testing the safety and efficacy of more than 1,800 SPF products, researchers at The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that only 25% offer adequate protection from the sun without using harmful ingredients, including hormone disrupting chemicals that can be especially harmful for kids.

To keep your kids sun-safe, look for sunscreens that are mineral-based and contain the following active ingredients:

  • Zinc oxide
  • Titanium dioxide

Things to avoid when shopping for a kid-safe sunscreen include:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Avobenzone
  • Ocinoxate
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Aerosol sprays

A few sunscreen options for kids that fit the bill and have earned top marks for safety and efficacy by the EWG include the following:

Why is removing sunscreen from your kids skin so important?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends using approximately one ounce of sunscreen to apply a thick layer to your child’s body 15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

After sweat, water play, and reapplication over the course of your time outdoors, it can be especially difficult to remove mineral sunscreens from your kids’ skin.

We asked dermatologist Dr. Saurabh Singh to weigh in on kid-safe sunscreen ingredients and exactly why removing sunscreen is so important.

"Repeated applications of sunscreen throughout the day will leave a residue that should be removed at night. Basically, the sunscreen can clog pores despite claims that the product is noncomedogenic," he explains. "But don't let that be a reason for not using sunscreen!" Just make sure to thoroughly remove it to avoid build up that can cause skin irritation or even lead to dryness.

Especially when using a mineral sunscreen, the residue that it leaves behind can be tough to get completely off of your kids skin. Aside from leaving them looking as pale as a ghost and irritating their skin, this leftover residue can also stain clothing and furniture. (And do parents really need anymore messes to clean up?!)
